How We Choose Research Projects

CLEAR has several methods to allocate monies to researchers to ensure the efficient allocation of funds that promote innovation, synergism and collaboration, while maintaining CLEAR's independence and integrity.

CLEAR’s peer review process invites arms-length researchers usually located outside of British Columbia to provide impartiality and independence. The assessment by each member of the Review Committee incorporates how the projects fit CLEAR’s invitation criteria and gives an opinion of the value of the research through an overall score. The Review Committee meets to discuss each proposal and each committee member submits a final and potentially revised score. All reviews are confidential. Results are reported to the Board and it approves expenditures based on the scores.

CLEAR may also work with trusted partners who have their own peer review systems. These proposals are also adjudicated by arm’s length reviewers and the reviewers remain anonymous even to the CLEAR Board. Score results are provided to CLEAR’s Board, who approve any expenditure and a Memorandum of Understanding outlines the expectations of both the partner and CLEAR.

How We Oversee, Learn From & Disseminate Project Results

All awardees have to submit annual reports to CLEAR regarding their research process and results. While grants may be one to five years, funding is typically done annually and payments only made after the annual research up-dates are received. These reports help CLEAR understand the progress made and provide research accountability. The reports will also outline the many challenges researchers face.

All researchers who receive CLEAR awards are asked to acknowledge CLEAR’s support in all presentations and publications. This increases the awareness of CLEAR’s work both in the research community and with those wishing to fund this valuable research.
